It’s the Law
License to Thrill
You must have a valid license to operate a motorcycle, scooter, or moped on Texas roadways. Operators must pass a written test covering traffic laws pertaining to motorcycles, as well as a road test. (The road test can be waived in certain circumstances.) Texas law requires that minors 15 to 17 years of age pass the Basic Course approved by the Department of Public Safety before applying for a motorcycle license.
It’s the Law
Texas motorcycle laws help create a safer riding experience for you and your fellow motorcyclists by mandating and enforcing operating and equipment standards.
Several new laws went into effect September 1, 2009 as a result of legislation passed during the 81st Legislative Session. Please see the Summary of bills affecting Motorcyclists document (PDF).
